At Gumbuya World Theme Park, we care deeply for every animal in our care and their health and wellbeing is always our priority. Animal welfare isn’t just about physical condition but focuses on an animal’s overall quality of life. It asks the question: is the animal having a fulfilling life of positive experiences?
We assess our animals under the Five Domains Model to ensure that we are achieving a high standard of animal welfare. The Five Domains Model is a science-based tool for assessing and supporting animal welfare by determining whether animals are having overall positive experiences.
We assess the first four domains (Nutrition, Environment, Health and Behaviour), which builds a picture of the fifth domain (Mental Domain) and the overall welfare of the animal.
We are accredited by the Zoo and Aquarium Association (ZAA) Australasia, an independent organisation. ZAA grants accreditation to zoos and aquariums that have clearly demonstrated their commitment to positive welfare.
Accreditation involves a thorough process where zoos and aquariums must provide compelling evidence on their operations, policies and the actual experiences of their animals, using the Five Domains Model.
All Australasian zoos and aquariums meet legal government welfare standards, but ZAA accredited institutions go above and beyond these requirements. Under ZAA accreditation, zoos are constantly evolving and improving their operations to deliver even better welfare for animals in their care.
Some experiences allow close viewing or walk-through encounters, while others are designed for observation only to prioritise animal wellbeing. Book animal experiences here.
