Gumbuya Explorers
What is it?
The Gumbuya Explorers program is designed to challenge students further by exploring habitats, behaviours, lifecycles, interspecies relationships of both Australian native animals and animals from other countries and their impact on vegetation and wildlife.
Students will use investigative processes to explore the ongoing consequences of European settlement of Australia when Europeans brought animals from their homeland to Australia and the profound effects on their new ecosystems, sometimes causing extinction of native species.
Year 5 - 6
Students are further challenged to explore and advocate for endangered Australian species and how their survival is linked to the physical condition of their environment or geological changes effecting this fragile balance.
Students will learn about breeding programs for endangered species and how they can help. Students commence their Gumbuya Explorer program with Wildlife Rangers exploring our native wildlife habitat, discussing introduced species and their effects on our wildlife’s survival now and into the future.
Students will use all their senses and enquiring minds to uncover ways they can advocate for our amazing wildlife.
Gumbuya Explored Learn:
Living things have structural features and adaptations that help them to survive in their environment. The growth and survival of living things are affected by the physical conditions of their environment. Sudden geological changes or extreme weather conditions can affect Earth’s surface. Identify the origin, content features and the purpose of historical sources and describe the context of these sources.
When explaining daily life in colonial Australia, reasons for migration and causes and effects of Federation. Describe and explain the diverse characteristics of places in different locations from local to global scales.Influence of people, including the influence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, on the environmental characteristics of Australian places.
